On June 2, 2022, we have an opportunity to elect biodiversity and climate leaders for Ontario. The next provincial government will make a generational difference – for better or for worse. 

Your vote can protect biodiversity hotspots and carbon stores. Your vote can improve the outlook for Ontario’s more than 240 species at risk. Your vote can help ensure the government respects the public's voice and upholds our right to be consulted on projects that significantly impact our communities and collective well-being. 

But between now and election day we need to make the environment a top election issue. At every opportunity, let’s make sure that the aspiring candidates get the message: Ontarians want clear commitments and action plans to effectively address ongoing biodiversity loss and the devastating impacts of climate change.

Whether at your front door, on the phone, at an all-candidates meeting, or in a letter or email, consider asking these questions: 

If elected, will you do your utmost to ensure that the government invests in expanding Ontario's protected areas in consultation with Indigenous communities?
Will your party commit to reversing the damaging 2019 amendments to the Endangered Species Act and restoring a science-based approach to species recovery, including mandatory habitat protection?
If elected, will you do your utmost to ensure that the government refrains from using Minister's Zoning Orders (MZOs) to fast-track development while dodging environmental protections and community consultation?

We must elect representatives who care about these issues and who will work with us to secure a future for our children and grandchildren. We can build a better world where people and nature thrive. But we need to start now.

Dear Premier Ford, MPP Horwath, Mr. Del Duca and MPP Schreiner,

I'm writing to inform you that this election, I'll be voting for the environment. A healthy environment is the foundation for healthy people and a healthy economy. We need leaders at Queen’s Park who understand and act upon this basic principle.

I am looking for these specific commitments from your parties:

1. A commitment to invest in expanding Ontario's protected areas network in consultation with Indigenous communities.

2. A commitment to reversing the damaging 2019 amendments to the Endangered Species Act and restoring a science-based approach to species recovery, including mandatory habitat protection.

3. A commitment to refrain from using Minister's Zoning Orders (MZOs) to fast-track development while dodging environmental protections and community consultation.

Ontario needs a government committed to taking bold and rapid action for the security and well-being of our children and grandchildren.
